Start with Ledger

Securely set up your Ledger hardware wallet, install Ledger Live, and learn best practices to protect and manage your crypto assets.

Why start with Ledger?

Ledger provides hardware-based private key protection coupled with Ledger Live — a single application to manage your crypto portfolio. Starting with Ledger ensures your private keys are stored offline in a certified secure element, reducing exposure to online threats while giving you full control of your assets.

Step 1 — Choose & unpack your Ledger device

Purchase only from an authorized reseller or Ledger’s official store. Confirm the device packaging is sealed. Unbox the Ledger device and keep the recovery recovery card and accessories in a secure place.

Step 2 — Install Ledger Live

Download Ledger Live for your operating system and follow the installer. Ledger Live is the official desktop and mobile app to add accounts, check balances, and install apps on your Ledger device. Download from Ledger’s official distribution to protect against tampered installers.

Step 3 — Initialize device & secure your recovery

Initialize your device using the on-device flow. Generate a new recovery phrase and write it down on the provided recovery card. Never store the recovery phrase digitally, share it, or enter it into any website. This phrase is the only way to restore your accounts.

Step 4 — Add accounts and manage assets

Use Ledger Live to add blockchain accounts (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and others), install companion apps on the device, and begin sending/receiving securely. Review transaction details on your device before approving.

Security reminders

Follow these essential steps to keep your device and funds safe:

  1. Only download Ledger Live from the official Ledger domains and verified app stores.
  2. Never disclose your recovery phrase — Ledger staff will never ask for it.
  3. Verify transaction details on the hardware device before approving.
  4. Use a dedicated secure computer or phone when handling large transfers.
  5. Keep firmware and Ledger Live updated to the latest official versions.
